Ethics Week!

The Center for Ethics is excited to announce special activities that have been lined up for faculty, students, and for the Tyler community in recognition of our 2nd annual Ethics Week! Council members have been working diligently on these events for the past few months, and my deepest appreciation goes to them for their hard work to make Ethics Week another success!
All of the details have not yet been worked out, but please mark your calendars to attend any or all of these events! An important email will follow this email with details about the Understanding Ethics Through Culture event, Wed., Feb. 19th.
The schedule and some details are as follows; please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about any of these activities:
  • Monday, Feb. 17, Honor Code Initiation
    These plans are in the works and you will be hearing more about this in the very near future!
  • Monday, Feb. 17th, 5:30-7:30, OAC BallroomRSVPS NEEDED, INCLUDING STUDENTS, BY FEB. 10TH!!!

    Dr. Demetras Pappas, JD, MSc, PhD: Title of Presentation: Protecting the Public Interest Through the Role of Prosecutorial Discretion: The Interviews of Jack Kevorkian's Chief Prosecuting Attorneys as compared to Other Anglo-American Cases in Developing Euthanasia/Assisted Suicide Cases with Reflection upon Legislative Responses and Prosecutorial Policies

    This event is targeted for UT Tyler Faculty, students and Tyler community leaders; appetizers and "meet and greet" will be from 5:30-6:00; she will do about a 30-35 minute presentation followed by an additional 30 minutes of questions and discussions. She has been very highly recommended and is known to be a very knowledgeable and dynamic speaker. This event maybe a co-sponsored event with the Tyler Chamber of Commerce; this is pending.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 18th, 8:00am, UC Theater RSVPS NEEDED, INCLUDING STUDENTS, BY FEB. 10TH!!!

    Dr. Demetras Pappas, JD, MSc, PhD: Title of Presentation: Euthanasia's Best Actors: The Depiction in Film and Cable of Medically Hastened Death, its Vocabulary, and its Oscar Winners (Colin Firth/The King's Speech and Javier Bardem/The Sea Inside and Al Pacino's Emmy for You Don't Know Jack

    This presentation is targeted for UT Tyler faculty and students; light food and beverages will be offered in the area just outside of the Theater at 7:30am (which is why we need RSVPs!). She will likely use the same format as described for the Monday evening event: 30 minutes of presentation, and 30 minutes of questions and discussions.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 18th, noon, (location TBA depending on RSVPs)
    RSVPS NEEDED, INCLUDING STUDENTS, BY FEB. 10TH!!!

    Dr. Demetras Pappas, JD, MSc, PhD: Title of Presentation: The Nurses Mini Study in the Voir Dire in People v. Jack Kevorkian: An Introduction to Professional and Other Issues Faced By Nurses in Euthanasia/Assisted Suicide Cases

    This presentation is targeted to UT Tyler nursing students and faculty, but anyone interested is welcome! Dr. Pappas also stated that this presentation will touch on "...some discussion of structural and professional differences in doctors and nurses and their trainings that come into play in end-of-life cases."

  • Wednesday, Feb. 19th, 4:30pm-8:15pm, LIB 401RSVPS NEEDED, INCLUDING STUDENTS, BY FEB. 10TH!!!

    Understanding Ethics Through Culture, co-sponsored with GATE (GINA, THERE WILL BE SEVERAL DOCUMENTS WE WILL USE FOR THIS EVENT, INCLUDING A REGISTRATION FORM THAT I AM ATTACHING. I WILL BE SENDING AFTER OUR 2/7 MEETING OTHER DOCUMENTS FOR THIS EVENT, E.G., RULES, GENERAL INFORMATION, JUDGING SHEET, AND CASE SCENARIOS.

    This event was a huge success last year, and it promises to be even better this year! UT Tyler students will debate each other regarding a scenario randomly selected for them.

    1st, 2nd, and 3rd places will be awarded, but all participants will have gifts!

    This can be a "drop in" or come a stay for the entire event! We strongly encourage everyone to attend in support of students who, for most of them, will be volunteering their time to participate!

    More details to follow. RSVPs are nice to have so we can be sure to have enough food for everyone!
